New Security Concept For SD-WAN

Cloud and as-a-service offers are changing IT infrastructures. SD-WAN, short for Software-Defined Wide Area Network, is becoming more and more the standard – network security must also adapt to this. SASE, Secure Access Service Edge, does not mean anything else. Because the term, which was coined by Gartner analysts in 2019, describes a security concept for distributed networks.

On the one hand, they make it more difficult to use the cloud because the data traffic must first take the detour via the headquarters. On the other hand, many employees today no longer work permanently at a fixed workplace. Home office, working while on the move or BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) poses challenges for traditional company networks. SD-WAN is available to implement more dynamic connections with the right technology available. However, it also requires a new security concept. All the new ways into the Internet that a software-defined network offers accelerate modern services, but at the same time they can become a target for hackers.

What Is Secure Access Service Edge (SASE)

SASE brings security as close as possible to the user. IT security itself is becoming a cloud service that can be used on all end devices, regardless of what the users are using to access apps. Security policies are enforced as needed via a robust and reliable cloud network that provides security controls at the access point. The policies take into account user identity, device type, time of day, location, application identity, and the sensitivity of the data being accessed.

SASE not only ensures that every user receives the appropriate access rights, but also that the same user and access rights, as well as applications, are subject to continuous monitoring. This is also accompanied by improved performance thanks to greatly reduced latency times. In summary, it can be said that with SASE, users can access applications and data the way they want without any performance restrictions. The IT department can also better enforce traffic security policies.

How Can Companies Use SASE

According to Gartner, at least 40 percent of companies will try specific strategies for introducing SASE by 2024. Therefore, now is the right time to plan this strategy. A logical and cost-effective way to start the transition to SASE with a cloud-based control is available with SD-WAN. Companies that already use a software-defined network have a comfortable starting position here. In this architecture, control over the network is already abstracted from the hardware, which is a prerequisite for SASE.

Open Systems delivered a SASE solution long before the category had a name. This integrated SASE solution can be customized to protect companies while providing the dynamic access users need. Also, administration and operation can be simplified considerably, thereby reducing costs.
